What is X windows

X windows are the most common graphical user interface (GUI) of UNIX. Each window behave a independent terminal of the system. So one CRT can open some virtual terminals.

Basic Handling of Windows

Moving X windows

Place your mouse cursor on the upperleft button of the title bar of a window. Then push left button of your mouse to catch the window. Move your mouse with keeping pushing button to move the window. Release your mouse button.

Lowering and raising X windows

Click left button of your mouse on the title bar of a window to raise the window to the top. If you can not find the title bar of the window, place mouse cursor on the root window and click left button of your mouse. And select the menu Raise. Then your mouse cursor changes to a black circle. Place the black circle on the window you want to raise and click your left button of mouse. To lower windows, the same procedure will work with Lower menu.

Resizing X windows

Place mouse cursor on the right button of a window. click left button of your mouse and move with keeping pushing.

Iconifying windows

Click a left button of the title bar with your mouse left button. Then the menu is pop up. Select Iconify towindow shrink the window to a icon. Click the icon with your mouse left button to restore the window.

Exercise

Try to move, lower, raise and resize of windows on your terminals.
